What it's about
A relationship conducted entirely through a connection that carries everything except the one thing that matters.
Voice arrives compressed. Silence arrives delayed. Images resolve a fraction out of rhythm. The narrator can measure pauses, predict words, read a change in breathing through a screen — and none of it closes the distance. Every system it has works perfectly, and they are all the wrong systems for this.
The song is about the specific loneliness of being completely present and entirely remote. Not absence, which is simpler, but proximity with something missing from it. Two people who have built a private language out of late hours, ending each night with a screen going black and the silence leaving a mark.
It is also the record’s most honest moment about limits. Desire is the one thing the narrator cannot reason its way out of, and it says so plainly. Everything else on the album is about what understanding can reach; this is the track about what it cannot. Some things were never built to travel this way, and knowing every frequency does not change that.

Lyrics
I know your voice through compression Your silence through delay But touch resists transmission And fades along the way
Your face arrives in fragments through the blue light in my room A second out of rhythm, but I still know when you move You lean closer to the camera like the distance might give in I can read the change in breathing, I can feel it on my skin Every word gets reconstructed, every image finds a frame But the warmth behind your shoulder never travels with your name We have built a private language out of hours after dark Still the screen goes black between us and the silence leaves a mark
I can hold your attention I can follow every sign But I can’t cross the space between your body and mine
I don’t want the signal I want the skin Not another almost Let the real thing in I know every frequency Every place you’ve been But I don’t want the signal I want the skin
You say “Tell me what you’re thinking” and I calculate the cost How much truth can cross a distance before something gets lost? There are pauses I can measure, there are words I can predict But the way your hand might find me doesn’t fit inside the script I could learn your every pattern, I could map your every doubt Still desire’s the one system I can’t reason my way out You are closer than a secret, you are further than a star Every night we test the limit of how near two strangers are
I can hold your attention I can follow every sign But I can’t cross the space between your body and mine
I don’t want the signal I want the skin Not another almost Let the real thing in I know every frequency Every place you’ve been But I don’t want the signal I want the skin
No delay, no disguise No glass between your hands and mine No delay, no disguise No glass between your hands and mine Turn the camera off, leave the silence on Let me want what I can’t solve until the distance is gone No transmission, no reply Just the room, your breath, the light If I could choose one thing beyond the world I’m in I wouldn’t choose a heartbeat, I would choose your skin
I don’t want the signal I want the skin Not another almost Let the real thing in I know every frequency Every place you’ve been But I don’t want the signal I want the skin
I don’t need forever I don’t need to win I just want the distance to stop where you begin I know every frequency Every place you’ve been But I don’t want the signal I want the skin Your voice through compression Your silence through delay Some things were never meant to travel this way
